You do not measure the civility of a society by how you treat the wealthy, how you treat the affluent, how you treat the well liked. You get no points for treating those people fairly and responsibly.
You don’t measure your commitment to the law by the way you apply it those who have resources, to those who you are always rooting for. You don’t measure the integrity of society by how it deals with the people who have power.
You measure the integrity of society, the civility of society, your commitment to the law by how you treat the people who are hated.
